Upscale community located just east of Interstate 15. Many new homes in the central and
northern parts of the city. Poway calls itself "The City in the Country."
Although generally suburban, Poway borders a good deal of open country. Many residents own
horses and many of the homes are built on large lots.
Poway was incorporated as a city in 1980 and this gave the locals control over
planning. Open space is closely guarded. Most of the local commerce is found along Poway
Road. The neighboring development of Carmel Mountain Ranch provides a large variety of new
shopping and restaurants.
For a sample of older Poway, drive the streets just north of Poway Road and east of
Pomerado Road. Homes and apartments built probably in the 1950s and 1960s. Two car
garages, three bedrooms. Some could use touching up, most show good care. Poway has its
modest homes and its custom $1,000,000 homes, some with great views. The north side of
town contains some horse estates and lots are generally larger.
Many homes run along tract suburban lines but upscale: two stories, three car garages,
tile roofs, the Mediterranean look, clean lines, large lots, lush landscaping. Utility
lines underground and everything is well kept.
Downtown San Diego is 23 miles away by freeway. Freeways in the region are being
improved and the eventual extension of Highway 56 to Interstate 5 will P-greatly shorten
the coastal commute.
At least eight parks, a golf course in town and one just outside of town. Riding,
hiking, jogging trails. Many of the homes have their own pools. Nearby Lake Poway is
stocked regularly with trout. The Community Center includes a pool, three sports fields,
two tennis courts, and auditorium. Performing Arts Center, the--pride of the town, the
plays, concerts, dance, school and community events.
Poway is a family town bordered by Rancho Penasquitos and Rancho Bernardo - upper
middle class developments and many professionals. The children come together in the same
nationally acclaimed Poway Unified School District. |
