Inland bedroom city near Lake Murray. La Mesa built for the middle class, half apartments, half single family homes. Some of the custom homes in the hills have views. As the community is close to Grossmont Community College and the San Diego State University, the citizens have numerous opportunities to participate in the many activities offered by the college and university.

The city also has 14 parks, one public swimming pool, public golf course, fitness facility, senior center, recreation center for children and adults, roller skating rink, Little League, soccer, Pop Warner football, Bobby Sox football, softball for girls, Little Theater, farmer's market, YMCA, Mission Trails and a Regional Park at Lake Murray.
