Located just south of the Coronado Cays, parts of Imperial Beach front on San Diego Bay... a choice location. Residential Imperial Beach runs about 14 by 20 blocks, some long, some short. Although much of the housing was built in the age of suburban circles and curves, the streets are laid out on a grid pattern, straight and wide and flat.

The dominant housing style is mid-to-late 20th century suburban tract - plain but well cared for. Some of the older homes are faded, the lawns browned out, but even these homes show care. Some of the newer homes are up-scale - two-story, 4 bedroom plus.

Military bases to the north, Navy airfield (helicopters) to the south, along with an estuary and a large state park. After that Tijuana. The city boasts a famous fishing pier, about a half dozen parks, trails, estuary nature center, library and a Senior Center. The Boys and Girls Club and the school district have set up child care programs before and after school. The city hosts an annual sand castle competition which draws about 300,,000.

On the down side, the water off of Imperial Beach occasionally gets polluted by drainage from the Tijuana River, and a swimming quarantine is imposed. However, this problem is being mitigated by the construction of a treatment plant and an out fall pipe that will stretch two miles into the Pacific.
